SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA — A pigeon was recently captured during an attempt to smuggle cocaine and cannabis into a Costa Rican prison.
The pigeon had the drugs strapped into a black pouch on its chest as it flew into La Reforma Penitentiary, reports the New York Daily News.
Correctional officers noticed the bird and captured it, removing a pound of drugs from its body.
“They observed the bulge on the animal so they captured it and confirmed that it carried a bag with a zipper – and the drugs were inside. It seems the dove was trained for it,” Prison director Paul Bertozzi said.
“We have a warning that this method can be used again as it is not the first time in the history of La Reforma that a pigeon was detected with drugs.”
The bag was found to have caused some damage to the pigeon’s digestive system after it was examined at a nearby rescue center.
The prison is investigating the drug-smuggling attempt.
