SPARTANBURG, S.C. — A former South Carolina prison guard is accused of providing inmates key impressions to help them escape.
The state Department of Corrections says 24-year-old Jeffrey Miller of Enoree was charged Wednesday with two counts of misconduct in office and aiding an escape. Miller was a corporal at the medium-security Tyger River prison in Spartanburg County.
Agency spokesman Clark Newsom says Miller resigned June 28 when the investigation began.
The agency accuses Miller of giving Styrofoam impressions of a housing unit’s master key to one inmate, and outlines of a key to a back door to another inmate.
Newsom says the drawings and impressions were confiscated, and the locks were changed before escapes were attempted.
An agency report says Miller confessed to providing the patterns and impressions.
