MANHATTAN, Kan. — A Kansas corrections officer was recognized for saving an inmate’s life.
The Mercury reports that on Aug. 1, Officer Sharlene Beverly was working in a female pod when she learned that an inmate was attempting to hang herself in a cell. Beverly responded and found the inmate tied a sheet around her neck, attached it to the top bunk of the bed and allowed her weight to create enough tension to cut off her oxygen.
Beverly lifted the victim and tried to loosen the knot around her neck. Riley County Police Director Brad Schoen said this was difficult because of the size disparity between Beverly and the inmate. Another inmate asked to be freed so she could help Beverly.
The released inmate then entered the cell and lifted the victim, allowing Beverly to untie the knot. The victim was able to breathe after medical staff provided assistance.
“The inmate’s attempted suicide was thwarted by CO Beverly’s quick thinking and dedication to safeguarding the inmates under her care, as well as the assistance of another inmate who was willing to become involved,” Schoen said.
Beverly was honored with a Life Saving Award, according to KMAN.
The inmate who assisted Beverly will receive a letter of commendation.
