RICHMOND, Va. — A whistleblower complaint filed against the Virginia inspector general’s office accuses officials of failing to properly investigate the death of a 24-year-old mentally ill inmate.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the complaint was filed Wednesday by Office of the State Inspector General Senior Project Manager Cathy Hill and two independent consultants.
The complaint says the agency did not adequately investigate the case of Jamycheal Mitchell, who died in a Portsmouth jail cell in August after losing so much weight his heart stopped.
The complaint also accuses State Inspector General June Jennings and another employee of misleading state lawmakers and violating federal privacy laws.
An agency spokeswoman declined to comment to the newspaper.
Mitchell’s family filed a lawsuit against correctional officials in May.
