ENFIELD, Conn. — The Connecticut Department of Correction says a prison inmate is dead after what is believed to be a fight with another inmate in a jail cell.

The department is investigating the “untimely death” of inmate Charles Gattert, 52, of Prospect, at the Enfield Correctional Institution.

“At approximately 3:11 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2015, correctional staff responded to a nonresponsive inmate believed to have been involved in a physical altercation with another inmate in the cell. Correctional and medical staff immediately initiated emergency and life saving measures. The inmate was transported to an outside medical facility, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 4:02 p.m.,” the department said in a release.

After the incident, the prison was placed in lockdown because of the “isolated incident.”

Gattert was serving a six-year sentence for risk of injury to a Minor and had been incarcerated since Sept. 26, 2012. Records in the state Judicial Branch also show arrests of Gattert in West Haven, New Haven and Eart Haven on charges of failure to register as a sex offender, violation of a protective order and violation of probation.

“The exact manner and cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office. The Department of Correction and the Connecticut State Police are investigating the death,” the corrections said in a release.
