SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A detention deputy lost her job after photos showed her posing with inmates inside the Bexar County Adult Detention Center, officials said. The pictures circulated on social media and showed the uniformed deputy on one side of a glass window as several women posed from an inmate holding area, KSAT reported.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office identified the deputy as Karla Beltran . The department said she was fired Monday, Oct. 12 , through a probationary dismissal. Beltran began working for the sheriff’s office July 1 and had served slightly more than three months, News 4 San Antonio said.

Some photos showed Beltran smiling and making peace signs as inmates posed behind the glass. Another image showed her raising her middle fingers toward the camera. Officials have not publicly explained why the photos were taken, who took them or exactly where they first appeared online, according to San Antonio Express-News.

New detention deputies and cadets serve a one-year probationary period. During that time, workers can be dismissed if they do not meet the department’s conduct or performance standards. According to local reporting, employees dismissed during probation cannot appeal the decision.

The sheriff’s office said it is investigating how the pictures were taken, who took them and where they were posted. No criminal charges were pending in connection with the incident as of Wednesday afternoon.
