HUNTSVILLE – Following two recent escapes, the Alabama Department of Corrections is working to prevent more.
WAFF reports that there have been seven escapes from the Decatur Work Release Center in the last four months alone.
The two recent inmates walked off of work-release job sites.
The DOC said it would be increasing communication with employers to ensure they keep a closer eye on inmate workers, educating and reminding staff to be more alert to changes in inmate behavior, and utilizing more frequent job checks by security staff as well as additional impromptu housing unit searches and institutional counts.
“We continuously review operations at all facilities to ensure optimal security measures are in place and being utilized,” the DOC said in a statement.
Both recent escapes have been recaptured, and one of the inmates was transferred to the Limestone Correctional Facility.
