LANSING, Mich. — The state department of corrections director sat down to address problems currently plaguing the state’s chosen prison food contractor.
Fox News reports that this is Daniel Heyns’ first meeting with media on the subject, after more than 100 people were fired over allegations of maggots in food, sex with inmates, and drug smuggling.
Though he didn’t initially oppose the hiring of Aramark Correctional Services, he did know there would be challenges.
He believes the company has done a poor job of training new hires.
When asked if it was his decision alone whether or not to hire Aramark, he says he would not have done so. In the end, Heyns said, he was following the orders of Gov. Rick Snyder who was looking for $26 million in savings.
