3 charged in inmate attack at N.C. jail

WENTWORTH, N.C.— Three inmates were charged with assault after a Rockingham County jail inmate was attacked early Tuesday.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office said a detention officer found Larry William Overby, 44, of Eden, holding a towel over his right eye. Overby told the officer that three other inmates had punched and kicked him at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday in his cell. Overby was later treated for his injuries at a local hospital.

Three men face charges in connection with the attack. They are: Delanio Lee Welch, 19, of 111 Josh Lane in Madison; Bradley Lewis Overton, 22, of 539 Washburn Ave. in Eden; and Steven Jerome Herbin, 38, of 511 Maloy St. in Reidsville.

All three were charged with assault inflicting serious injury. A magistrate added $10,000 to their current bonds.
