JUNEAU — Four years ago Duane Olbinski apprehensively took a job at the Dodge County Jail to forge a career in law enforcement.

After saving an inmate’s life in April and being named 2008 corrections officer of the year, it looks like he made the right decision.

Olbinski, who splits his time as a village of Clyman police officer and correctional officer at the jail, was named the state correctional officer of the year at a banquet hosted by the Dodge County Law Enforcement Association on Jan. 16.

Olbinski describes himself as “a regular guy in a uniform,” who talks straight and bluntly to people. Perhaps that’s part of the reason why inmates seek him out to talk.
