PENDLETON, Ind. — Officials won’t know the cause of a Pendleton prison inmate’s death until toxicology test results are known in six to eight weeks.

Madison County Coroner Ned Dunnichay said an autopsy performed Thursday at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie on Anthony C. Kamman, 34, proved inconclusive.

Dunnichay reiterated Thursday that officials don’t suspect foul play in Kamman’s Tuesday death.

“We’re probably looking at an overdose case,” the coroner said, “just due to his past drug abuse history.”

Sheriff Ron Richardson said Wednesday an ambulance was dispatched to the Pendleton Correctional Facility shortly before 7 p.m. Dunnichay said officials with his office were dispatched to Saint John’s Medical Center about two hours later, and Kamman died at the Anderson hospital.

The coroner said Kamman was discovered in his cell, and there were no obvious signs of physical trauma.

Kamman was sentenced to 50 years in prison in May after being convicted of rape in southern Indiana’s Jennings County. He was charged with the crime in 2004, according to the Indiana Department of Correction.

He was scheduled to be released in November 2031, according to the DOC.

Kamman also had previous convictions for burglary, possession of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance.
