BOSTON — A civil liberties group says immigrants being held in Massachusetts jails pending deportation receive inadequate health care and are often subjected to overcrowding.
Laura Rotolo of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, the lead researcher of the investigation, tells The Boston Globe that there is no incentive for authorities to ensure detainees’ rights are protected.
The ACLU conducted interviews with detainees, spoke with advocates and lawyers, and reviewed government documents for the report, scheduled to be released Wednesday.
A spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says the agency knows about the ACLU report and is in the process of responding. Paula Grenier says the agency is committed to treating detainees properly.
