Md. corrections to triple prison products industry

BALTIMORE, Md. — The secretary of Maryland’s Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services said he aims to triple the amount of furniture, food and other products produced by inmates.

Gary Maynard told Washington County business leaders today at a breakfast in Hagerstown that the expansion is made possible by a new state law requiring profits from Maryland Correctional Enterprises to stay within the agency.

Maynard said that in recent years, the state government has used the agency’s million-dollar annual profit to fund other state programs.

Maryland Correctional Enterprises employs at least 1,600 inmates at nine prisons.
