MARQUETTE, Mich. — An inmate at Marquette Branch Prison has been given a life sentence for attacking a nurse during an examination.

Albert Eliel was sentenced Wednesday for assault with intent to murder. Judge John Weber also ordered another term of 9 1/2 to 20 years for assault to commit sexual penetration.

A Marquette County Circuit Court jury convicted Eliel of both counts last month.

The 57-year-old already was serving time for sexual misconduct when he attacked the nurse in February 2007.

Prison reports say he kicked a wedge from under an open door to close it, then choked the nurse and threatened her with a razor blade he had concealed in his mouth.

The nurse defended herself and took a phone off the hook, setting off an alarm.
