KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A third-generation Knox County officer died today after an early-morning car crash, authorities said.

Andrew Wilson, a Knox County Sheriff’s Office corrections officer, was off duty when his private vehicle wrecked on Asheville Highway near Gov. John Sevier Highway just before 3:45 a.m., KCSO spokeswoman Martha Dooley said.

Wilson, 21, was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he died of his injuries, Dooley said.

Wilson was the son of KCSO Assistant Chief Deputy Roger Wilson, who oversees corrections, and the grandson of Bill Wilson, a retired KCSO captain, she said.

Knoxville police will investigate the crash, which happened inside the city limits.

“It was a single-car crash and no one else was in the vehicle,” Knoxville Police Department Lt. Bob Wooldridge said. “It was just a real tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.”
