PITTSBURGH, Pa. — A former Allegheny County Jail inmate with a history of violent assaults was convicted yesterday of attacking two jail guards on Jan. 31, 2007.

Anthony Tusweet Smith, 29, of Aliquippa, took the stand at trial Tuesday and admitted that he hit Officer Robert Wilkinson with an open palm during a dispute about him not being in his cell. When the guard walked away and pulled an emergency pin notifying others he was being threatened, Mr. Smith followed, hit the guard again, threw him by his collar to the ground and smacked him several times. The guard did not fight back.

The second altercation happened shortly thereafter when guards escorted him to a cell in a disciplinary unit. When a guard uncuffed him, witnesses testified, he took two swings at Capt. Joseph Demore. Both victims testified that they suffered no serious injuries.

Common Pleas Judge Randal B. Todd found Mr. Smith guilty of two felonies, causing bodily injury to one guard and attempting to cause an injury to the captain. No sentencing date was set.
