Ark. senator proposes bill to reimburse county jails for state inmates

TEXARKANA, Ark. — New legislation in Arkansas would outline a method and time frame for the state to reimburse county jails for housing federal inmates.

KSLA reports that Senate Bill 329 was created by Sen. Jim Hickey to address the issue of jail overcrowding.

Jail overcrowding has long been an issue in the state, with county jails picking up slack for the state and taxpayers footing the bill.

In Miller County alone, the state is deficit $550,000.

Senate Bill 329 would force the state to repay county jails on the fifteenth day of each month.

Hickey hopes to present the bill to legislature within the next two weeks for approval.
