BLACKMAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Two inmates breached an interior fence using a stolen service van Tuesday afternoon at Jackson County’s correctional facility on Chanter Road, the sheriff’s office reported in a statement.
Both inmates attempted at about 2 p.m. June 26 to ram the vehicle through the perimeter fences, but the damage from the first breach disabled the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies responded and subdued both inmates by using their Tasers and chemical spray, the sheriff’s office reported. The inmates were removed from the facility and placed in isolation.
One of the inmates had threatened the driver of the van, within the jail grounds, the report states. The inmate then took the keys and was joined by a second inmate, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office is asking the county prosecutor to charge the inmates with vehicle theft and attempted escape.
Fences were immediately repaired, and the facility was secured following the situation, the sheriff’s office reported. Staff’s quick response prevented any other escape attempts, police said.
“Further efforts are underway to ensure an incident like this does not occur in the future,” reads the statement.
The county has two jail facilities. The Chanter Road jail typically houses inmates of lesser security levels. The other is in downtown Jackson, at the sheriff’s main offices on W. Wesley Street.
