23 Neb. inmates found to have received improper sentence reductions

It’s unclear if any of those inmates will be required to return to prison to complete their sentences

LINCOLN — At least 23 inmates received improper reductions to their sentences due to miscalculations under the enhanced good time law, Nebraska prison officials have announced.

The Omaha reports that it’s unclear if any of those inmates will be required to return to prison to complete their sentences.

The reduction issue was discovered in June.

So far, the Department of Corrections has reviewed 400 of the 2,000 inmates who may have been released too soon.

Corrections Director Scott Frakes says he hopes new software, which has been difficult to develop, will help prevent further issues in the future. The software is expected to be ready to use sometime this fall.

Until then, all enhanced good time calculations are being done manually.
