NEWARK, N.J. — Two adults and a 16-year-old have been charged in the July killing of an off-duty Essex County corrections officer in Newark, who was shot in her car after the three attempted a carjacking, authorities said Friday.
The Essex County prosecutor’s office has charged 30-year-old Maurice Holstin, 22-year-old Laquann Reed and the juvenile with felony murder, carjacking, conspiracy and weapons charges.
Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said Holstin, Reed and the juvenile had also been charged for their alleged involvement in other crimes, including an armed robbery in Bloomfield shortly before Debora Ferreira was killed. Holstin and Reed also face aggravated assault and weapons charges for an Aug. 3 shooting in Newark, and Reed faces carjacking and weapons charges in an Aug. 1 incident in Newark.
