DENVER — A Denver jail inmate was charged Thursday with the attempted murder of a sheriff’s deputy.

Cether Watkins, 25, was charged with one count of criminal attempt to commit murder in the first degree and three counts of assault in the second degree, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

Watkins was in jail for an alleged armed robbery of a Starbucks with multiple victims.

On Monday, Watkins allegedly attacked a sheriff’s deputy, hitting him in the head with a large plastic bin and choking the victim, according to a news release. Other inmates intervened and helped to stop the assault.

Watkins is scheduled to appear in court Monday to be advised of the charges.

In his original case, Watkins allegedly robbed multiple victims at gunpoint inside a Starbucks at 9925 E. Hampden Ave. on Oct. 13, prosecutors said. He was charged on Oct. 17 with third-degree burglary and nine counts of crime-of-violence sentence enhancers. He’s scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 6 for a preliminary hearing.
