TUCSON, Ariz. — The Utah street preacher convicted of kidnapping and raping Elizabeth Smart has been transferred to a high-security prison 10 miles south of Tucson, Ariz.
Bureau of Prisons spokesman Edmond Ross says Brian David Mitchell was brought by U.S. marshals to the prison on Wednesday.
The prison is where Jared Lee Loughner, who is charged in the Tucson shooting rampage in January that wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, was held before he was transferred to a Missouri prison facility to undergo mental health treatment.
U.S. marshals picked up Mitchell from the Salt Lake County jail on Aug. 31, but didn’t say then where Mitchell would be taken.
Mitchell was sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines for sex.
