MODESTO, Calif. — A federal police officer is facing a murder charge in the shooting death of a colleague as the two fought with a group of people outside a Modesto bar.

The Modesto Bee reports that a Stanislaus County judge set bail for Robert Anthony Moreno at $2.9 million Thursday and scheduled his arraignment for Oct. 24.

The 30-year-old Moreno — a U.S. Department of Defense police officer — is accused of pulling a gun during the July 22 fight and shooting fellow federal officer Daryl Chargualaf.

He and Chargualaf had apparently gotten into an argument with a group of people inside the bar that spilled into the parking lot.

Moreno’s attorney, Kirk McAllister, said his client fired the gun in self-defense and inadvertently struck the 34-year-old Chargualaf.

Moreno is also facing attempted murder and assault charges.
