TECUMSEH, Neb. — A Nebraska jury gave its first verdict in connection to the deadly prison riot at Tecumseh State Correctional Institution last year.
According to the Lincoln Journal Star, Roger Weikle was found guilty in the attack on Cpl. Joe Hatzenbuehler, who Weikle tackled to the ground and kicked in the face.
The riot last May began when another inmate punched Hatzenbuehler’s cheek as he tried to secure a third inmate, Rashad Washington, for refusing to give his inmate number to a caseworker, the publication reported.
According to a video shown to the jury, Weikle then attacked Hatzenbuehler.
Two inmates were killed in the riot.
According to the report, Weikle is already serving a sentence of 72 years to 218 years for first-degree murder and a number of other charges. He is currently held at the Nebraska State Penitentiary.
