Second inmate pleads guilty to murder in Miss. riot

NATCHEZ, Miss. — Another inmate involved in the 2012 Adams County Correctional Facility riot that ended in the death of a correctional officer has pleaded guilty to murder.

The Clarion Ledger reports that Jesus Beltran Rodriguez, 36, pled guilty Monday to second degree murder.

During the May 20, 2012 riot, several correctional officers were assaulted and taken hostage. Sgt. Catlin Carithers was killed when inmates attacked him with a food tray. The hostages were held for several hours until authorities were able to quell the riot.

At least 19 inmates have been indicted on charges related to the riot. Total damage to the facility was estimated to be $1,305,142.

Rodriguez will be sentenced on May 19, and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison and a $250,000 fine.
