SAN ANGELO, Texas — A Tom Green County Jail inmate injured two correctional officers and spat on another Thursday, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.
The inmate, Victor Chavez, 31, had been arrested Wednesday, released on bail, then arrested again in another incident, according to jail records.
The news release states that Chavez was in a cell and began striking the cell door “with enough force to harm himself.” Officers ordered him to go to the rear of his cell, intending to enter the cell and put Chavez in a restraint chair so he could not hurt himself, according to the release.
When they entered the cell, Chavez “became combative” and an officer used a Taser on him. However, a struggle began when Chavez continued to resist restraint, the release states, and Chavez bit two officers and spat on another as they put him in the restraint chair.
One of the correctional officers suffered a “severe wound to his arm” and was taken to Shannon Medical Center for treatment, as was Chavez.
Chavez is charged with two counts of assault on a public servant in the incident, a third-degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison and fines up to $10,000.
Chavez had been arrested Wednesday, charged with assault of a family member after the San Angelo Police Department responded to a family violence call, and he was issued a criminal trespass warning from the property, according to SAPD. Chavez was bailed out the same day and returned to the residence, which he began damaging, according to SAPD. He was re-arrested on criminal trespass of a habitation charge.
Assault of a family member and criminal trespass of a habitation are Class A misdemeanor charges punishable by up to a year in county jail and a fine of up to $4,000.
