Federal investigation probes inmate abuse at Attica

Believed to encompass more than just a recent suit against 3 COs for beating an inmate

NEW YORK — The federal government is now looking into inmate abuse at the Attica Correctional Facility, according to a new report.

WXXI News reports that the investigation was revealed in court filings by three former correctional officers who pleaded guilty in March to charges stemming from the beating of an inmate.

The officers were allowed to avoid jail time in exchange for a guilty plea and resigning from their positions.

They are still facing a multi-million dollar civil suit by George Williams, the inmate who sustained the injuries.

An attorney for one of the officers referred to a Justice Department investigation into a possible violation of inmate civil rights at Attica, saying that she was told the probe was not limited to the alleged assault on Williams.
