AUSTRALIA — An inmate who allegedly threatened to set himself on fire by detonating a makeshift bomb has surrendered to police at Barwon Prison.
The Age reports that the inmate was taken into custody without incident or injury. Authorities are now examining the device that was found strapped to the inmate.
It’s believed the man, who remains unnamed, was making threats over a personal matter and not over prison conditions.
The device is believed to be made of ground match heads, which inmates are provided with at the prison. The facility is currently in process switching to a smoke-free environment.
This is the second time in less than eight months that an explosive consisting of ground match heads has been found at Victoria’s highest-security prison.
