BRITISH COLUMBIA — A former corrections officer with the Province of British Columbia says his mental health was compromised after his workplace failed to transfer him or relocate an inmate who assaulted his sister.
The CBC reports that the former CO, Barry Rhodes, has left his job and launched a Human Rights complaint, saying someone needs to be held accountable.
He tells CBC that he could no longer face working at the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Center, knowing that he would come face to face with his sister’s rapist every day.
Rhodes acknowledged that working in corrections is a stressful career, but he says he faced an unusual source of stress in facing the man who caused his sister to take her own life.
He said the inmate was provocative and taunting, but prison officials did nothing to alleviate the situation. He is now looking to hold the province accountable for his trauma.
The allegations have yet to be proven in court.
