SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Chuckawala Valley State Prison has found a use for all the contraband phones they’ve collected.

KION Right Now reports that the prison has donated more than 200 contraband cell phones to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office to help survivors of domestic violence.

The phones will be given to Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence. The agency collects used cellphones and recycles them for much-needed funds. This one donation will generation between $2,000 and $2,500 for the agency.

“Some of these phones were used by inmates who have been convicted of domestic violence, and now they will be used to help survivors,” said ADA Johnny Gogo.

“We are grateful to the Chuckawala Valley State Prison officials for their generosity and willingness to help our community’s crime victims.”

The prison seizes about 300 contraband cellphones a year, according to Sgt. Curtis Carney. That slowed to about 35 once a cellphone blocking system was installed. Carney said that people hike miles through the desert to throw phones over the prison walls.
