CHINO, Calif. — Prison officials are briefing sheriffs across California on how a weekend riot that destroyed seven Southern California prison housing units might affect their jail populations in weeks to come.
Scott Kernan, undersecretary of adult operations for the state prison system, told the AP on Thursday that sheriffs from California’s 58 counties were invited to participate in an afternoon conference call.
Kernan says local jails haven’t seen an abnormal backlog of inmates yet, but it could happen.
Saturday’s riot at the California Institution for Men in Chino forced the closure of an inmate reception center that serves four Southern California counties. More than 1,100 inmates have been moved to other locations.
