MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A lawsuit filed by the family of an inmate who died while in custody over a traffic ticket is moving closer to trial.
ABC News reports that lawyers for the family and for the county argued in federal court Wednesday, but a judge has yet to make an official decision.
The family’s attorney believes the lawsuit won’t be tossed.
David Stojcevski died while in custody at the Macomb County Jail while serving 30 days for a careless driving ticket that he couldn’t pay a fine for. He died halfway through serving his sentence from withdrawal, and his family alleges that jail employees didn’t respond to his medical needs.
County leaders have spoken out against the suit, saying that it only made the news after they rejected a shake down from the family’s attorney.
“The inaccurate story damaged the reputation of the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, in my opinion, for no good reason,” Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said.
