NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC — An inmate who rushed correctional officers in an attempt to attack them had her finger severed when she tried to stop a 700-pound cell door from closing.
WWAYTV3 reports that New Hanover County Jail staff were performing a headcount when they went into the cell of Kelsey Alexandra Lynch. Lynch attempted to attack the officers, who then backed out of the cell.
As the door to her cell was closing, Lynch attempted to stop it with her hand. The tip of one of her fingers was severed.
On-site medical staff responded to the incident; deputies then drove Lynch to the hospital in a patrol vehicle.
Doctors were able to reattach the finger and Lynch is expected to be OK.
Lynch was jailed on a charge of failure to appear in court and has since been released on $1,000 bond.
