NEW YORK — A Rikers Island medical clinician suffered a broken jaw and a fractured eye socket after asking jail bosses to add locks to his office door.

The NY Daily News reports that Ralph Atlas was repeatedly pummeled by Jonathan Hodgson, an inmate at Rikers Island.

The attack was captured on surveillance camera.

Atlas had approached Hodgson, asking if he wanted to meet in his office for a counseling session. Hodgson declined and walked away. Hodgson later sneaked into Atlas’ office and attacked him unprovoked.

Hodgson is currently serving time for beating someone with a baseball bat. He has received new charges for the attack on Atlas.

Atlas says he has no previously negative history with the inmate.

In response to his request for locks on his office door, Atlas was told officials were uncomfortable with the idea, as it could trap a staffer inside.

Atlas plans to sue the city and Corizon, the private medical firm hired by the city to provide medical care to inmates.
