UK inmates given heroin substitute

Nearly 30,000 inmates were part of ‘opioid maintenance’ by being given methadone

UNITED KINGDOM — Inmates in Britain are being given a heroin substitute to help them kick their addictions, but their sentences are often too short to complete the treatment program.

The Daily Mail reports that nearly 30,000 inmates were part of ‘opioid maintenance’ by being given methadone.

National clinical guidance recommends the treatment for inmates whose sentences are lower than six months, but many who are signed up for the program are in prison for less than three months.

Lawmakers say that prisons are spending too much on methadone dependency and not enough on programs to help people get rid of their drug habits permanently.
