MUSKEGON, Mich. — Community members gathered outside a state prison to thank correctional officers for their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
WZZM13.com reported that community members, including police officers and firefighters, stood outside the MDOC facility in Muskegon County during shift changes with signs that read “Thank you” and “Our heroes.”
“We are just trying to say that we appreciate you and that we are thankful for corrections staff who are heroes every day,” Jeff Zack, a retired state corrections officer, said. “They are the first responders who do not get much credit.”
Currently, nearly 300 MDOC employees and over 2,000 inmates have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
