Okla. detention officer dies after suffering medical episode at jail

TULSA, Okla. — A detention officer died Wednesday after suffering a medical episode while on duty.

TulsaWorld.com reported that John Okafor, who joined the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office in 2007, suffered the medical episode while working at the Tulsa County jail. Okafor was working at his assigned inmate pod when the incident occurred, according to Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Justin Green.

Colleagues, paramedics and doctors tried to save Okafor, but he died at a hospital.

“He was a hard working and highly respected member of this agency,” the department posted on Facebook. “He will be missed. Please keep his family and co-workers in your prayers.”

Green said Okafor’s medical episode was “strictly a medical issue” and was unrealted to COVID-19.
