BORGER, Texas — A corrections officer at William P. Clements Unit in Texas is being recognized for the brave actions he took during a wildfire.

Corrections Officer Guy Pigg was at work on Feb. 27 when he was informed about the fires that were threatening homes in Borger, Fritch and the community of Meadowlark, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Pigg was allowed to leave the unit to check on his home. After Pigg confirmed his home was safe in Fritch, he became concerned about a family member’s home in Borger, TDCJ stated.

Pigg helped his family member evacuate from her home and made sure she had a fire barrier around her home. Pigg then drove back to Fritch, loaded up a tractor and began creating fire barriers around random homes throughout the town, according to TDCJ.

“In total Officer Pigg was able to assist in saving 10 homes despite the large amount of smoke and without regard to his own safety,” TDCJ said.

Pigg made it home around 4 a.m. the next day.

“The Clements unit administration is extremely proud of this outstanding employee and of his heroic efforts in the recent wildfires,” TDCJ said.
