$26.7 million in late taxes owed in Mecklenburg
CHARLOTTE - Mecklenburg County is owed more than $26.7 million in delinquent taxes for 2008, with many people saying the poor economy is the reason they couldn’t pay on time.
The Charlotte Observer reported that an advertisement appearing in Sunday’s newspaper lists more than 28,800 overdue county tax bills for land, buildings and business equipment, as well as personal property including boats or airplanes.
State law requires local governments to publish the ads as a way to notify individuals and businesses that they owe taxes.
Tax collector Neal Dixon said his office has heard from many people who blamed the economy for their late tax bills. The office also saw a higher-than-normal number of people who waited until just before Jan. 5 deadline for paying bills this year.
Attorney James Morgan named Father of the Year
HIGH POINT - James Morgan most often is identified as an attorney or a three-term member of the N.C. House of Representatives.
Now he can add Father of the Year to his long list of awards.
The honor recently was announced by the Greater Greensboro Area Father’s Day Council, and the award will be presented June 5 at a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association in Greensboro.
Morgan is the only non-Greensboro man to receive the award, and he’s proud to carry that banner for High Point, he said.
Morgan is the father of two grown children and the grandfather of six. If he has been a good father, Morgan said, it’s because of the help of his wife, Ann, and the success of his two children, Lea Pflaging and Jef Morgan.
“I really think it’s more of a salute to the children, rather than the father,” Morgan said.
