SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. — A statewide activist group dedicated to curbing prison spending has graded San Bernardino County with a “double fail” for its plans to expand three jail facilities, according to a report released Tuesday.
While Californians United for a Responsible Budget’s report card says San Bernardino County offers some alternatives to incarceration, it criticizes three projects that will expand Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center in Devore, Adelanto Detention Center and West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
“A lot of counties are not utilizing a lot of the alternatives to incarceration that are available to them,” said Diana Zuñiga, statewide program coordinator.
The group, known as CURB, has released report cards the last three years, grading counties based on their use of realignment funding.
Only two of the 13 counties graded by CURB passed, another six failed and five more received a “double fail” grade. Kern, Riverside, Los Angeles and San Mateo counties joined San Bernardino with the lowest grades.
