CHATHAM, Ga. — A Chatham County Jail officer, who was off-duty and unarmed, was honored for stopping two armed thieves who were robbing a gas station.

Savannah Now reports that Kendal Duff was heading back from a movie with his sister when he noticed the robbery in progress.

When he couldn’t get through to 911 immediately, Duff pursued the robbers in his vehicle and eventually got the attention of a nearby police officer by honking his horn.

He then joined the officer in pursuing the suspects, tackling them so the officer could restrain them.

Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Roy Harris said Duff has good instincts.

“He saw crime occurring, and he reacted to it. We are very proud of him.”

Duff received a Valor Award, which recognizes first responders who went above and beyond to display courage.
