Convicted drug dealer escapes halfway house

The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY, N.J. Cops are looking for a convicted drug dealer who had been busted in Jersey City and has gone missing from a Newark halfway house.

On Friday, James Grullon, 29, of New York City, went missing from the Kintock halfway house, where he was finishing a 10-year sentence with a 33-month minimum, state corrections officials said.

He was locked up on a drug distribution conviction and began his prison term on Nov. 4, 2005, state corrections officials said.

Grullon was arrested on July 18, 2005 by Jersey City narcotics officers and he remained in jail until his sentencing because he could not post bail, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.

After his sentencing he was taken from the Hudson County jail in Kearny and sent to state prison, DeFazio said.

Last month, he filed a motion requesting to be taken out of prison in order to enter a drug treatment program, but he remained in custody at the time of his escape, DeFazio said yesterday.

Corrections officials seek the public’s help in locating Grullon and ask anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact the New Jersey Department of Corrections Special Investigation Unit - Fugitive Unit at (800) 523-3829.
