HEMPSTEAD, Texas – The family of the woman who died in police custody last week has ordered an independent autopsy to be conducted.
“We want to understand how it is that this kind of played out and what will ultimately end up being the cause of death,” Cannon Lambert, the family’s attorney, said, according to ABC. Results are expected within 48 to 72 hours.
Authorities stated that Bland committed suicide in the Waller County Jail. She was arrested on July 10 following a routine traffic stop, which authorities alleging she was “argumentative and uncooperative.”
Bland’s family says she was in the middle of moving to Texas to start a new job and “would never take her own life.”
Both the Texas Rangers and the FBI have been investigating Bland’s death since it became public.
