BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — A shank-wielding inmate who claimed he had a bomb was subdued in the Broward County Jail late Monday after he allegedly attacked a detention deputy.
Semil Alcena, 34, already charged with sexual battery, will face additional charges that include battery on a law enforcement officer and making a false bomb report, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.
The deputy was inspecting cells at the jail when Alcena made threats, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Alcena reportedly was carrying a shank — a homemade weapon shaped like an ice pick, the Sheriff’s Office said. He also was carrying a device made of newspaper, socks and wires. Alcena claimed it was a bomb, the Sheriff’s Office said.
“Alcena handed the deputy a note saying he had a bomb and that the deputy needed to let him go or they would both be hurt,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
The inmate then reportedly tried to stab the deputy with the shank before grabbing the deputy’s pepper foam and spraying it. The deputy fled the cell. A team of deputies responded and subdued Alcena.
“For security purposes, the BSO bomb squad responded to analyze the supposed bomb, but it turned out to be nothing more than newspaper, socks and wires from the inmate’s radio,” the statement said.
The deputy was treated for minor cuts at Broward General Medical Center. A second deputy suffered a twisted knee while Alcena was being subdued.
