STEVENS POINT, Wis. — A car thief was caught after leaving foot prints in the snow that allowed investigators to track him down.

Stevens Point Journal reports that Alex McDonald, 22, was sentenced to three years in prison for a series of car thefts.

Police responded to the report of someone trying to break into a car in Plover; the car and license plate being used by the thief matched that of another stolen vehicle.

The investigating officer was near her squad when a car drove by with its headlights off. She followed the car in her squad and later found the vehicle crashed into a snow bank.

Footprints found in the snow leading from the crashed stolen vehicle ended up matching those of McDonald’s shoe treads.

McDonald was already on bond for two previous auto theft charges and has also been convicted of bail jumping, disorderly conduct, substantial battery and possession of marijuana prior to the current charges.
