NEW ORLEANS — A former deputy sheriff arrested after a physical altercation with an inmate in the Orleans Parish Prison last year has been found not guilty of malfeasance.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports 33-year-old Lateefa Marshall could have faced up to five years in prison had she been convicted as charged in connection with the March 29, 2014 incident.

Her former employer and prosecutors accused her of committing an “unprovoked battery” on inmate Shantya Trahan.

Sheriff Marlin Gusman and District AttorneyLeon Cannizzaro held a joint press conference in May 2014, announcing Marshall had been fired and was to be arrested. But after hearing a half-day of testimony Tuesday, Criminal District Court Judge Tracey Flemings-Davillier acquitted the former deputy.
