WAIKIKI, Hawaii — Thirty new correctional officers will be joining the Department of Public Safety, after a graduation ceremony on Monday.

KHON2 reports that the recruits passed Basic Corrections Training, which includes 360 hours of classroom time and physical training.

Recruits learn standard of conduct, professionalism and ethics, report writing, interpersonal communications, maintaining security, crisis intervention, STGs, firearms, self-defense tactics and physical exercise.

“This class showed a great deal of dedication over the past eight weeks,” said Acting Lieutenant Dawn Clemente, BCT Officer in Charge. “We have updated and modified our training curriculum to provide the most current and proven best practices used in correctional facilities around the country. This isn’t an easy job. One not only has to be a peacekeeper in the prisons and jails, but a counselor, mediator, role model, and above all else, a professional.”

All incoming classes receive Recruit Field Training, which allows them to begin their job with the guidance of their training sergeants.
