ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — An inmate at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution stabbed another inmate Tuesday 10 times with a homemade metal knife, authorities said.

The inmate accused in the stabbing faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, said Pasquotank County Sheriff Randy Cartwright. The inmate who has been accused is in prison for second-degree murder.

The victim, whose name was not released, is recovering at Albemarle Hospital. The victim is serving a prison sentence for robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Attacks with weapons are rare at the prison, Cartwright said.

The metal shank used as a knife was believed to have been made from a piece of a locker, Cartwright said. But guards could not find a piece missing from a locker.

The two inmates lived in cell blocks relatively far apart, he said. A witness said the two had exchanged heated words earlier in the day.
