Sheriff’s deputies arrested an 18-year-old man Friday morning who had walked away from a Maricopa County jail kitchen on Thursday.
The escapee, Maurice Desjardins, was hiding in a two-story home in the 8400 block of West Pinnacle Peak Road, authorities said. Sheriff Joe Arpaio was on the scene as deputies forced their way into the north Peoria home and took Desjardins into custody.
“It is the home of his 15-year-old girlfriend,” said Capt. Paul Chagolla, a sheriff’s spokesman.
He said Desjardins, a jail kitchen worker, walked away Thursday night from a kitchen near 35th Avenue and Durango Road in the Southwest Valley.
Investigators later found his jail clothing along a canal bank and believe Desjardins had help in escaping and getting to the Peoria house, said Chagolla.
“He was able to walk away last night with some assistance,” the spokesman said.
Desjardins was behind bars for a number of property crimes and was scheduled for release in November. However, he may have been facing the possibility of additional charges, and an escape charge likely now will be added.
