Loophole in Fla. law allows DOC to hide location of inmates

Families are concerned about not knowing where their loved one’s killers are serving their sentences

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A loophole in Florida law allows the Department of Corrections to hide the location of certain inmates.

Action News Jax reports that families are concerned about not knowing where their loved one’s killers are serving their sentences.

Attorney John Phillips, who represents Jordan Davis’ family, hasn’t been able to find Michael Dunn, and the DOC refused to divulge his location.

Dunn was sentenced to life plus 90 years for the shooting death of 17-year-old Jordan Davis.

Another inmate whose location is being kept under wraps is Jarred Harrell, who is serving six life sentences for kidnapping and killing Somer Thompson on her walk home from school in 2009.

When pressed for information, the DOC replied that “information regarding Harrell is confidential and exempt per Florida law.”

A little known statute is being used by the DOC to protect the inmates, though it’s unclear why they would be included under the statute.

State Sen. Audrey Gibson said that she understands what the families are going through, but that it’s the department’s job to protect both inmates and officers.

Gibson and other lawmakers tell us they’ll take a closer look at the law next session.
